Pick of the week: Menz Pale Ale
PICKS OF THE WEEK / Halifax bar pumps out suds for the pink palette
Cameron Herdman / Vancouver / Thursday, April 23, 2009
If you would rather pass on wine and cheese and go straight for beer and nuts, there’s a bar in Halifax pumping out suds for the pink palette.
Menz bar has revamped the pride of Nova Scotia with its own micro-brewed pale ale sold exclusively to Menz bar patrons.
Frankly I’m surprised Halifax beat Vancouver to the punch on this. With the amount of breweries and vineyards in this province, you would think someone would have thought to market a product as simple and crowd pleasing as beer to a community known for its partying.
You win this round Halifax, but we’ll see which city is better at hot nude yoga.
As for Menz Pale Ale, it will give you a nice buzz with its generous amount of head and sharp aftertaste — not unlike a night at the PumpJack.

Destination Halifax markets city as gay-friendly
BY JON TATTRIE, METRO HALIFAX
The Nova Scotia Business Journal
HALIFAX – The capital city showcased itself as a gay-friendly tourism destination last weekend, just in time for a visit from Rosie O’Donnell next month. Lynn Ledwidge of Destination Halifax and Hugo Dann of Halifax Pride acted as guides for journalists from Boston, Chicago, New York, Washington and Los Angeles — all “gateway” cities with direct air access to Halifax, apart from L.A.
“They were overwhelmingly impressed,” Ledwidge said Sunday. “Our destination is a beautiful, welcoming community in all seasons.”
The group took in the usual sights — downtown Halifax, the Public Gardens, Citadel Hill and Peggys Cove — along with the vineyards of the Annapolis Valley. A journalist from California, one of the world’s great wine capitals, was especially impressed by the quality of the wine. “He said, ‘I have something to take back to my editor and present a whole new angle on the story than I had anticipated,’” Ledwidge said. “He was very pleased.”
They also checked out the newly-opened Menz Bar on Gottingen Street, which bills itself as situated in the heart of Halifax’s gay village, and dined at Chives on Barrington Street. “It’s not just about bringing people here for seven days for one festival. It’s about presenting our destination for all its attributes: It’s warm, friendly people. It’s lovely scenery and it’s accessible,” said Ledwidge.
“It was great,” said Dann, adding their guests were surprised at how sophisticated the gay scene is in Halifax. He said a similar-sized city in the U.S. would not be so well-developed. “It was very enlightening for them.” – Metro Halifax
